What is social enterprise?

A social enterprise is a business that is trading for community benefit. Here at jerry, we are trading for social good rather than for individual benefit. We do not create profits for the individual benefit of owners or shareholders. No business should trade solely for profit. It is important to know why you are in business, and what you are trying to achieve. Jerry is in business because we love water so much, we want everybody to have access to it. That’s why we give all our profits away to fund water projects.

People love creating terms for the different types of social enterprise on a continuum from 100% ‘social enterprise’ to 100% ‘for profit’, but this debate can be a huge waste of time and resources. Wilkinsons give 5% of their profits to community projects: Does this make them a social enterprise, a social business or is it corporate social responsibility? Who cares! What matters is doing ‘community benefit’ – and we should all be pursuing ways of doing business that benefit others.

What defines jerry as a social enterprise is that we have social aims written in to our governing document, and we have a clause showing that we use our profits to fulfil those social aims. Not only do we give all our profits to fund water projects, we are also going to create opportunities within our company to do social good, like share workspace with other start up social enterprises. Our Directors are involved in other charitable work such as running the Waterfall Charity, teaching young people how to play tabla, and mentoring young people to launch their own enterprises.

Our aims show that we care about:

  • Funding water projects around the world
  • Protecting the environment through promoting long lasting water bottles
  • Advancing the health and of the public through encouraging a healthy water habit
  • Helping other sustainable social enterprises

We hope that you will join jerry in caring about these charitable aims. It would be great if you could follow us on social media and share our content to help us reach as many people as possible. To find out more about helping jerry, please get in touch. Having your support would be fantastic.
